Self-Care Sunday: True Rest Float Spa Detroit

Happy Sunday, friends! Can you believe that New Years Eve is tomorrow? Whenever we approach a new year, I always take some time around NYE to conduct a self-care assessment and reflect on ways in which I can take better care of myself in the coming year. If you’re the same, I’m eager to share more about True Rest Detroit today, as they are definitely a place you need to incorporate into your self-care routine in 2019.

True Rest Float Spa was started back in 2009 when the founders were searching for ways to truly rest and heal. They noticed that in today’s society with stressors and distractions around every corner (working long hours in our jobs, sitting in traffic on our commutes to and from said job, constantly being connected to our phones, social media, etc), it has become impossible for us to truly relax. Enter: float therapy.

Float therapy is an incredible tool for relaxation, pain management / relief, sleep and overall sense of wellness and well-being. Float therapy offers the perfect set of conditions to help your body and mind totally relax with three core pillars: salt, weightlessness and meditation.

SALT: I’m sure you’re aware of the benefits of taking an epsom salt bath (awesome for your hair, nails, skin, naturally detoxifying, helps relieve joint pain, melts stress away) — think of this as the most epic salt bath you could ever experience. With float therapy, 1,000 pounds of Epsom Salts help prevent inflammation in your body including in your joints, muscles, sprains, strains or sore muscles.

WEIGHTLESSNESS: When you mix 1000 pounds of salt in 180 gallons of water you get a 30% salt solution, which allows you to float effortlessly atop the water and I have to tell you: to experience this is so cool. This salt water combo creates a deeply relaxing anti-gravity environment, as all weight and tension can be dropped; it’s even safe to fall asleep (which I totally did!). With this weightlessness, there are zero pressure points on the body, which can provide up to 100% pain relief. What’s even cooler is that the weightlessness in float therapy actually helps the spine naturally elongate and straighten, and your body undergoes the same regeneration process that happens while you’re sleeping.

MEDITATION: Guys, this had to be my favorite part of the float: one hour of zero gravity and zero distractions. This glorious hour of float therapy is said to decrease the production of cortisone (stress hormone), helping us to feel extremely refreshed and serene after the float. During your float, you’re in a pod or tank of salt water and you have the option to close the pod, immersing yourself in complete darkness. I will admit: at first, this is a little alarming because you are in complete and total darkness. I mean you literally cannot even see your hands in front of your face. If that makes you uncomfortable, there’s a light in the pod that you can keep on during your float or you can keep the door of the pod open, but I’d definitely recommend doing your best to float in total darkness so that you’re able to enter a completely meditative state. The point of floating in pitch black is so that all external sources of distraction are removed, thus providing an extreme form of rest. It’s during this rest that the brain is able to enter the theta brain-wave state, associated with deep sleep and dreaming. The temperature water of the water is perfect, which makes you feel like feels like floating on a cloud or in outer space (or what I imagine floating on a cloud or in outer space to feel like, anyway).

First, let’s discuss the amazing benefits of float therapy:

PHYSICAL: Like I mentioned before, just being in the state that float therapy allows you to be in (low-gravity, totally silent, and pitch-black) is such a unique experience alone. Not only does float therapy foster the perfect conditions for your body to truly and deeply relax, it also allows our bodies to recuperate faster and more efficiently. Other physical benefits include increased blood circulation, increased healing abilities, pain management, increased immune system functioning.

MENTAL: Obviously the physical benefits of float therapy very apparent, but so are the mental benefits. First and foremost, the environment of low-gravity, totally silent and pitch black surroundings gives the mind the opportunity to totally relax. If you’ve engaged in any kind of meditation practice before, you know that the first 10 minutes or so are the most challenging because our minds are going in a million different directions and want to be doing anything but sitting still. Our brain is a computer with one program running all of the time: keeping us safe. When we slow down and attempt to relax and calm the mind, it fights us because it feels like it cannot properly do its job to keep us safe if its relaxed. So our thoughts race, our mind wanders, our body becomes agitated that we’re not immediately acting on the various things that our mind is randomly bringing to our attention. But the more that we just continue to stay in a relaxed state, the sooner the mind and body start to let go and release. This mental release is kind of like the opposite of stress, which allows the brain to stop allocating its resources to processing the experience of all of our senses, and in turn, allows us to experience amazingly positive mental effects / releasing a surge of positive neurochemicals. Additional mental benefits include: the reduction of stress, increased creativity, increased reaction time and sensory acuity, sleep schedule maintenance and feelings of euphoria.

What makes True Rest Detroit unique:

  • Their staff. Wow, I could write another post on the staff alone. Coming into a new experience like float therapy can be intimidating, but their staff is so incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. Any questions I had were answered with grace and detail. They were so lovely as I was taken through my first-visit orientation (you should arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled float) and I just felt so at peace from the moment that I opened the door.

  • Their space. Not only is your float session totally relaxing, but the entire space is totally zenned out. Once you go through your first-visit orientation, you’re taken to a room with tea, water, books, journals, etc. to relax before going into your private room for your float. After your float is finished, you shower off and get dressed in your room and then have the opportunity to go into another room where you can finish getting ready for your or pull out one of their yoga mats to do some post-float stretching before heading back out into the real world. Every corner of the space is designed to help you relax, which I think is absolutely incredible.

I cannot speak more highly of True Rest Detroit, the people there and the life-changing benefits that float therapy has to offer. Float therapy will definitely be a must-have for me in terms of self-care for 2019! If you have any questions at all about my experience here, please don’t hesitate to contact me!
